What you should be prepared for when moving to another state to attend school?
A lot of American teens move to another state to go to school. It’s a tradition in this country – an exercise of their new found independence. There are a lot of things that you should be prepared for when you move to another state – a few things can go wrong if you aren’t thorough in your preparations.
First of all, do you have your living situation figured out already? If you’re going to live in a dorm, you need to make sure that you have that arranged long before you get there as not to cause any problems. Communicate with the college, and your roommate, to make sure that everything is taken care of in terms of payment before you go. This is a given, but make sure you know where your dorm is before you leave for college. This will save you a lot of effort and time.
If you’re going to live in an apartment, you need to make sure that you have all of the expenses taken care of. Are you going to have enough money for a few month’s rent until you find a job? Do you have your basics paid for and packed? It would be bad to forget something at home or not have enough money – it would be a lot of stress, on top of the stress of school.
If you’re living with a roommate, it’s a good idea to befriend them on your social networking site of choice, or to get their phone number. This will help to make sure you both are holding up your end of the responsibilities needed to move into a new place.
If you were asked to buy things like bedding, a television, a microwave, or other essentials, did you do it?
You’re not going to look like a great roommate if you forget something that is going to make living a lot easier for the both of you. So keep your communication lines open. It’s good to start school with a friend. If you are moving with a friend from home, then spend some time before college gathering the essentials and taking care of payments together.
You need to make sure you have emergency funds set aside. A lot can go wrong when you move out of state. Things could get stolen or damaged. You could need to get emergency medical treatment, or something could go wrong with your car. There are a lot of possibilities. So make sure that you are going out of state with money saved up, as to avoid any financial issues.
