Verizon FiOS subscribers who are also Starz and Encore customers can now access Starz Play and Encore Play on their Apple mobile device for no additional charge. Starz Play provides around 400 movies and original programming every month, while Encore Play offers about 900 entertainment choices.
Starz’s deal with Verizon is just the latest, following similar pacts with DirecTV, AT&T U-verse, and Cox Communications in the last 4 months. The premium cable channel also has outstanding agreements with Dish Network and Comcast, who offer Starz’s exclusive programming on their TV Everywhere platform.
“We are delighted to further enhance the great entertainment value that FiOS offers with the addition of Starz Play and Encore Play for our customers,” said Verizon’s VP of content strategy Terry Denson. “Complimentary portable and online viewing of premium content is a great way to increase the value of our customers’ subscriptions and we are very pleased to work with Starz to help deliver the best value for our FiOS customers.”
This is just the latest move by Verizon FiOS to provide more value to their subscribers. Just last week, the telco/MSO added programming from 11 NBC networks to its TV Everywhere offering. In addition, the company has reached agreements with ESPN, Fox, NFL Network, Viacom, HBO, and Showtime to provide TV Everywhere content for their subscribers.
Meanwhile, competing cable MSO Time Warner Cable has just announced a lab study that will focus on eye tracking devices, which should gauge how smartphones and tablets affect TV viewing. Ball State University is heading the cable giant’s research project at the Time Warner Medialab in New York, which will incorporate focus groups and online surveys to determine viewer interaction on mobile devices.
The race to attracting more video customers depend on many factors, so pay TV providers are looking for any edge they can get to attract subscribers.
