Not content with its successful foray into the pay TV, Internet and VoIP service industry, Verizon Wireless has decided to partner with the National Council on Aging (NCOA) in order to support its goal, which is to help older adults with chronic conditions lead independent lives. Verizon will continue to develop innovative technology for the health and wellness industry, which should improve the quality of life for independent living seniors with chronic ailments such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.
For America’s graying population, chronic diseases take up a sizable chunk of the nation’s healthcare costs. About 9 out of 10 seniors are living with at least one chronic condition, while at least 2 out of 3 seniors are living with 2 or more. When it comes to reducing costs and improving quality of life, better technology that helps seniors manage their health may hold the key.
Richard Birkel, NCOA’s senior VP of healthy aging, stated that NCOA will partner with Verizon to develop “innovative approaches and technology platforms to better integrate the array of healthcare and community services that patients with multiple chronic conditions often need.”
The Verizon Foundation will be entering productive partnerships with other national healthcare nonprofits, with an emphasis on improving access and quality of care by providing advanced health information technology (HIT) solutions.
The telecom and MSO is no stranger to the health and wellness industry, as it is already the provider of choice for select senior living residences such as The Virginian in Fairfax, Virginia. In addition to providing Internet, Digital TV, and phone service for the community, Verizon is also providing the infrastructure that hosts the advanced senior care technology the facility relies on—which has proven invaluable to the staff and residents alike.
“Verizon has large commitment to bringing technology to the health and wellness space,” explains Mike Weston, the director of marking operations at Verizon’s Enhanced Communities division. “We identify and work with ‘best in class’ partners, if they have great ideas and contributions to make in terms of products and services that ride on our network.”
So far, it looks like Verizon is looking to be the undisputed leader in innovative solutions for senior health and wellness. As America’s population gets older, anything that enhances health management and independent living is a benefit—not just to the seniors looking to preserve their quality of life, but to their families and society as well.
